Alexandra Kenzian, travel specialist at Ruefa Reisen, has visited Bali several times herself. She shares some of her personal highlights off the beaten tourist track.
Island of gods and demons, land of 10,000 temples – these and many other names are often heard when speaking of Bali. Once you've been there yourself, you quickly understand why. Everywhere you look – countless statues and temples adorn the cities and villages – it feels like another world.
Bali is full of cultural sights and is also particularly scenic. It's far too special for just a beach holiday – beyond the tourist centers, you'll find artistic rice terraces, two volcanoes that strongly shape life on the island, mountain lakes and jungle regions, as well as countless temples – each one unique, and it's truly worth visiting more than one.
Of course, the easiest way to explore the island is through a short round trip, but for those who prefer something different, there's a great way to get to know the island better: For over 20 years, jeep tours with the VW 181 – also known as the Kübelwagen – have been offered. These excursions take you to untouched areas, allowing you to experience Bali up close in a convertible. The aim is to stay as far away from the tourist crowds as possible – and it works very well… The tour guides on these trips are true Bali experts (also German-speaking) and strive to give guests a deep insight into this exotic culture.
Alexandra Kenzian’s recommendation: WEST BALI Tour The excursion first leads to the famous sea temple, Tanah Lot. It continues to the jungle temple Batu Karu – one of Bali’s most mysterious and mystical temples. With many photo stops, the tour then passes through Bali’s lush rice terraces, including a short hike through the fields. At 1,200 meters above sea level lies the beautiful Lake Bratan with the Pura Ulun Danu, one of Bali’s most photographed temples, with its pagodas situated in the lake. Afterwards, there’s an opportunity to shop at a colorful market full of vegetables, spices, and fruits. The tour concludes with a visit to a rice farmer’s house in the afternoon.
For those who want even more – there are additional day and multi-day tours available with the VW Kübelwagen…
