Did you know...? The myth about snow

Winterlandschaft Sonnenuntergang

The myth that Inuit have more words for snow than any other language is – yesterday’s news.

The myth that Inuit languages have the most words for snow compared to other languages is—old news. The rumor stems from the cliché that Inuit people deal most with snow, ice, and cold weather conditions, and therefore talk more about snow. But which language actually has the most words for snow? According to a study by the University of Glasgow, the Scottish language has a total of 421 words for snow, making it the record holder.

Either way... For those of you who love crafting and have always dreamed of building an igloo in the far north, be sure to ask for “illusaq,” the right kind of snow for building an igloo, and “sirmiq,” the slushy snow used to cement an igloo. If you get thirsty from all the effort, you should boil “aniu,” which is snow used to make water. But be careful: if you use “aidu” instead, you’ll be drinking water made from snow that has just been trampled by reindeer.
