Budget, location, reviews & family needs—find the perfect hotel with these smart travel tips.

Whether it's a 5-star or mid-range hotel, central or quieter location – these and more are factors to consider when choosing a hotel. We've put together some tips to help make your search for the right hotel easier.

Small hotels or hotel chains?

Here too, it depends on whether value for money is your priority, or if you prefer a hotel that is more individual or personal. If the latter is the case, small private hotels are better. However, hotel chains have the advantage of already having a certain image and level of recognition. So you know what to expect.

The budget question

The type of accommodation you choose naturally depends heavily on your vacation preferences. If you want to be pampered and not miss out on luxury, it's advisable to book hotels with at least 4 stars. But be careful: each country has different rating standards. So be sure to find out exactly what the hotel includes for that category in the respective country. If a clean room without many extras is enough for you, affordable hostels and mid-range hotels are certainly a good alternative.

Negative reviews – book anyway?

Customer reviews are always important, including when choosing a hotel. However, keep in mind that comments are subjective and that there are hardly any hotels without negative reviews. But if the overall rating of the hotel is positive, you're on the right track.

The right location

Location is crucial for many things and depends on your needs. Hotels that are not located directly in the city center are usually cheaper. But: if the hotel is somewhat remote or not near a bus or tram stop, you may need to take a taxi or shuttle service. That means additional costs. So think carefully about what is important to you.

Vacation with children

To keep children entertained during the day, it's advisable to look for a hotel that offers various entertainment and play options. From swimming lessons to pony rides, the offerings can vary. If you're traveling with a baby, make sure the hotel at least provides basic equipment. This includes, for example, a travel crib, high chair in the restaurant, kettle, changing mat, etc.

Watch out for “real” pictures

Of course, most people first look at pictures of the hotel to get a literal picture of it. Hotel providers often use sample images, which may sometimes differ from reality.

To avoid disappointment, it's advisable to look at hotel photos taken by guests. Don’t confuse these with management photos.
