Time has stood still in these places. All over the world, there are so-called abandoned places. Each one holds a story.

1. Hell Gate – the abandoned island in New York, USA

North Brother Island lies between the Bronx and Queens and has been abandoned for over 50 years. In the 19th century, a quarantine hospital was built on the island. Patients with contagious diseases such as tuberculosis were admitted there. As more and more patients arrived, the hospital had to be closed due to lack of space and especially hygiene. The horror story continued, however, as after World War II the island was used as a rehab clinic for young drug addicts. That also failed, as many relapsed. Over 50 years have passed since then, and the island has been left to nature.

2. Train Cemetery of Uyuni, Bolivia

The train cemetery lies a few kilometers south of Uyuni. The city built Bolivia’s first railway line in the early 20th century, but the industry collapsed around 1940. Since then, many trains have been left unused. In this abandoned spot, you can admire over 100 locomotives, many of them more than 100 years old.

3. Haunted Hotel in the Black Forest, Germany

The hotel near Baden-Württemberg was once considered one of the most luxurious in the area. Opened in 1902, it was a meeting place for nobles and kings. During World War II, it was used as a military hospital, where many soldiers died. Since then, rumors have spread that the hotel is haunted. It changed owners several times and has now stood empty for years.

4. Space Shuttle Hangar Baikonur, Kazakhstan

The 130-meter-long and 60-meter-high hangar at the Baikonur Cosmodrome is quite impressive. It is a relic of the "Buran" space program from 1976. The Soviets tried to develop a space shuttle similar to the American model but failed miserably. Even today, two of the space shuttles can still be seen in the hangar.
