Vacation means relaxation and leaving everyday life behind. This, of course, also applies to people with allergies. Are you affected? Then you may already know what precautions to take. Nevertheless, take a look at our recommendations.
International Allergy Passport
Before your trip, be sure to consult your doctor for advice. Find out whether your destination is suitable for you and what risks you need to consider. Since communication can be difficult abroad, you should definitely have your doctor issue you an international allergy passport. It’s also advisable to research the local medical care. Bring all relevant medical documents and, if necessary, pack your medications in double quantities.
Best Destinations for Allergy Sufferers
- Dust Mite Allergy: Choose regions with a dry climate, as mites cannot thrive in dry air. Destinations like the Alps, Norway, or Iceland are ideal. Very warm areas are less suitable. Mites are commonly found in cushions, seats, and blankets, so don’t forget your anti-allergy medication.
- Pollen Allergy: A trip to the mountains is recommended. At altitudes above 2,000 meters, the air is usually largely free of pollen. If traveling by car, keep windows and doors mostly closed.
- Mold Allergy: Travel in spring or winter, as mold spores multiply especially in summer and autumn. Like with pollen allergies, mountain destinations are ideal.
Allergy-Friendly Hotels
Some hotels offer rooms specifically designed for allergy sufferers and cater to their needs. If you are allergic to animal hair, make sure that no animals are allowed in your room or, ideally, in the entire hotel.
For food intolerances, many hotels offer special menus, such as lactose- or gluten-free options.
General rule: Whether it’s pollen, dust mites, or food allergies, always check what’s available and inform the hotel of your intolerances.
No Stress!
Start your travel preparations early and stay relaxed. Our bodies are complex systems that react to stress. With the right and timely preparation, even allergy sufferers can fully enjoy their vacation. We wish you wonderful holiday moments and hope you always travel safely and stress-free.
