For us globetrotters, this is a state that can only last for a short time. However, in some countries, the COVID-related lockdown restrictions are already being eased. Here are a few current examples.
Vietnam
Curfews vary depending on risk classification. The restrictions from recent weeks remain in place, and homes may only be left for essential needs such as groceries and medicine. Walks are allowed if wearing a face mask.
South Africa
Anyone wanting to leave their home needs a valid reason, such as buying groceries, visiting a doctor, or other emergency measures.
New York City
The Big Apple is known to be heavily affected by the coronavirus, and the rule "Stay at home" still applies. Only those who urgently need to go out may do so, wearing a mask and keeping a two-meter distance. Walks are allowed, as even Mayor Bill de Blasio personally considers them necessary.
Japan
The state of emergency in Japan has been extended until the end of May, and residents are expected to stay home until then. However, there are no penalties if someone leaves their home.
Italy
Parks and public gardens have reopened, and people are allowed to walk there, provided they maintain sufficient distance. Everyone must carry a document stating the reason for leaving their home.
France
Walks are allowed within a one-kilometer radius of one’s home, and an ID with proof of address must be carried. This rule is expected to be lifted starting May 11.
United Kingdom
Walks are allowed once a day, alone or with members of the same household, in the vicinity of one’s home.
For globetrotters at home, this non-travel time can be bridged with the following reading (available at your favorite bookstore):
- Johann Gottfried Seume: *Walk to Syracuse in the Year 1802*
- Mark Twain: *A Tramp Abroad*
