Why do I need annual travel insurance?

You travel more often than you think: Find out why travel insurance is important.

The annual travel insurance starts the moment you pass your town sign

What most people don’t know: For travel insurance purposes, a trip begins when you leave the town sign of your place of residence. Whether you're heading to the airport, on a weekend getaway, a wellness retreat, a day trip with the whole family, a business trip, traveling by train, bus, plane or ship—or on a road trip by car. In short: you're covered for all trips and excursions throughout the year. You don’t need to think about it, the insurance is always with you, and you can’t forget to take it out.

Cost factor: hospital visits while traveling

If you need to see a doctor or go to the hospital while traveling, it can get very expensive without travel insurance. Why? Because your E-Card is only accepted in public hospitals and by contracted doctors in the 27 EU member states. Apart from a few exceptions (Switzerland, Turkey, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Macedonia), the insurance pays a flat rate between €27 and €84 per day. For inpatient hospital stays, that’s €175. The actual costs are much higher and can become a financial burden. We cover up to 100% of doctor’s fees and up to €1 million in hospital bills.

Travel insurance and COVID-19 protection

With comprehensive travel insurance from Europäische, COVID-19 is covered like any other illness during travel—at no extra cost. This includes medical expenses, return transport, additional costs for necessary extensions or quarantine on site. COVID-19 is also considered a valid reason for trip cancellation, so you can book worry-free again. A new info page explains: What happens if I test positive before departure? What if I get sick at the vacation spot? Are there differences between countries? What about travel warnings? Here you’ll find the latest information.

1 in 40 travelers experiences a claim

Anything can happen: 1 in 40 of our customers experiences a claim while traveling. This doesn’t necessarily mean an air ambulance transport—though that’s included too. Common issues include lost or damaged luggage, stolen cash, or the need to see a doctor.

Cancellation insurance is important

You might not be able to take your trip due to personal or professional reasons, or you may have to cut it short. Tour operators, airlines, and hotels charge cancellation fees. A suitable cancellation insurance, included in the annual coverage, reimburses these costs.

Year-round travel insurance saves money

If you travel frequently, an annual policy is more cost-effective than individual ones. And remember: a trip isn’t just a safari in Uganda or a road trip across the USA—it’s also a day of shopping in the next city, a business trip to another region, or a weekend at the lake. So, you’re traveling more often than you think.

Annual travel protection for the whole family

With the right annual insurance from Europäische, all family members are covered 365 days a year. On vacation—and especially within Austria. No matter how often you travel. This automatically includes holiday camps and school trips.

Return transport from abroad

With annual travel insurance, we cover 100% of return transport from abroad—if necessary, even by air ambulance. If you’re hospitalized for three days, you’re entitled to return transport upon request (excluding air ambulance), even if it’s not medically necessary. At home, in familiar surroundings, with friends and family, recovery is faster.

Is there travel insurance that covers everything?

To be precise: there are different travel insurance packages depending on your needs. Important questions to ask yourself: Do I need extended cancellation or interruption coverage? How are delays in flights, ships, or trains covered? Do I need more coverage for search and rescue if I go on adventure trips? Do I need to extend the maximum travel duration per trip if I go on a world tour? Does medical cancellation advice make sense? How is my companion insured? Our products are tailored to your needs. We’re happy to advise you before you sign up.
