Wooden carnival mask with green cape and confetti all around.

Carnival, Fasching, or also known as the so-called "fifth season" is celebrated around the world in a wide variety of ways. We have listed the funniest and most bizarre carnival customs from around the world for you.

Germany

In southern Germany, pig bladders are filled with air. This tradition, called "Saublodern," is a hit during the carnival season. The balloons are hit on the ground during Fasching to produce a special sound. Another tradition dating back to the Middle Ages involves participants wearing a heavy straw suit that covers the entire body. The face is hidden with a wooden mask.

Tenerife

Here, men run around in high heels. Yes, you read that right. Once a year, during carnival time, men in Tenerife take to the streets in daring stilettos. A high heel race follows.

Helsinki

There, sledding is done for a good cause. This custom is based on a superstition: “Those who sled a lot support the harvest,” they say in Helsinki. Sledding during carnival is especially hyped among students.

England

Have you ever heard of the Shrovetide football game? The game takes place on a huge field about five kilometers long. Hundreds of players gather here to score goals together.

Trinidad and Tobago

In Port of Spain, the parade called “J’ouvert” takes place annually. People smear themselves with crude oil mud, paint, clay, and chocolate sauce. There’s also a superstition behind this: smearing the clothes is meant to bridge the gap between rich and poor.
