Greece - away from mass tourism

Boat in bay of Alonnisos

"Is it possible?" - "Yes, definitely," says Andrea Springer from Springer Reisen.

Because every island has its own special charm. Discover which lesser-known island destinations you shouldn't miss and what hidden gems await you, as shared by the expert here:

Greece has always enchanted us with the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. Breathtaking beaches, unique sunsets, and culinary highlights – all this and much more is what we associate with the “Land of 1,000 Islands.” In fact, there are even more islands and island groups – 3,054 to be exact. However, the popularity of this travel destination also brings crowded attractions, busy cities, and packed beaches.

But surely, there must be a way to avoid all that – right?

We spoke with travel expert Dr. Andrea Springer from Springer Reisen and got tips for our next vacation in Greece.

No desire for Santorini or Mykonos?

As a Greece specialist, Dr. Andrea Springer knows that the Cyclades island group has much more to offer. She recommends starting your exciting journey of discovery on Naxos. From there, you can continue to smaller, lesser-known islands.

Just a short boat ride away is the first stop – Koufonissi. This small fishing island with only around 400 residents enchants visitors with its golden sandy beaches – especially Pori Beach in the east. Next up is Astypalea, known as the “Butterfly of the Aegean” due to its unique shape. This impressive island still offers an escape from mass tourism and features many family-run accommodations. If you want to avoid the crowds but still enjoy a lively nightlife, she recommends the third stop – the island of Sifnos, west of Naxos. Its narrow alleys, surrounded by white houses with blue window frames, leave nothing to be desired. From picturesque beaches to beautiful boutiques and numerous taverns, the island offers plenty of variety for its guests. Springer Reisen insider tip: The Notos Café right on the beach serves delicious snacks, specialty coffees, and – later in the day – cocktails.

“The Scattered Ones” – for sailors and divers

The Sporades consist of two island groups – the Northern and Southern Sporades; the name translates to “the scattered ones.” If you're looking for a paradise for sailing and diving, this is the place to be.

The expert from Springer Reisen suggests starting with the island of Skiathos. To explore the secluded coves and beaches in the north of the island, it's best to rent a boat, as this part of the island – to the benefit of those seeking peace – is still not well developed. In the evening, head back to town for a stroll and a delicious meal at a taverna. Dr. Andrea Springer's insider tip: “Don’t forget to try ‘Tsipouro’ – a drink similar to Ouzo!” It tastes especially good at her favorite taverna, “Mouragio.”

For the romantics among you, the idyllic island of Skopelos is just right. The coastal roads offer stunning views of white beaches and olive groves. The picturesque town enchants with its pastel-colored buildings and numerous churches and chapels. Dr. Andrea Springer's insider tip: Enjoy the tranquility at Kastani Beach, but don’t forget to bring provisions – there’s no beach bar here.

To conclude your journey of discovery, the green paradise of Alonissos offers wonderful opportunities for divers and nature lovers. The island invites you to stroll and hike through fragrant pine forests. In the island’s main town, local venues with live music provide the perfect setting to relax and reflect on your exciting trip.

We thank Springer Reisen and especially Dr. Andrea Springer for the diverse journey through Greece and now invite you to make your vacation dreams come true.
