The travel bucket list for animal lovers

Whale Watching in Sydney

Watch whales, turtles, penguins & more – ethical wildlife experiences in Australia, Costa Rica, Japan, Borneo & Argentina.

For all animal lovers, it’s the ultimate dream to spend time with a variety of animals. That’s why we’ve selected travel destinations where animals – in an ethically responsible way – are the main attraction.

Whale Watching in Sydney

These magnificent creatures can be observed in their natural habitat in Australia. From May to December, humpback whales migrate along the east coast to the north to give birth. In Sydney, there are several national parks where whale watching tours can be booked.

Turtles in Costa Rica

In the Las Baulas Marine National Park, you can witness green sea turtles laying their eggs. However, this is only possible under the supervision of a park guide and in limited numbers, as the goal is to avoid disturbing the turtles. Flash photography and cameras are strictly prohibited. The best time to visit is from October to March.

Penguins in Argentina

Yes, you read that right. At the southern tip of Argentina, you can actually encounter penguins. Boat tours to the “Island of Penguins” depart from Ushuaia. To protect the animals, only a maximum of 20 people are allowed on the island at a time.

Cats in Japan

Aoshima is known as the “Cat Island.” On average, each island resident owns six cats. However, the island is only accessible by ferry, and only a limited number of people can visit each day. Alternatively, Enoshima Island is much easier to reach. There, the residents care for and protect countless cats. If you choose to visit one of these islands, be sure never to feed the animals outside of designated feeding areas.

Orangutans and Proboscis Monkeys in Borneo

Borneo is the third-largest island in the world and the largest in Asia. In addition to over 200 animal species, orangutans also live there. Particularly impressive are the rescue and rehabilitation centers where orphaned, sick, and injured orangutans are cared for. In Borneo, you also have the chance to encounter proboscis monkeys, which are found exclusively on the island.
