Travel blogger Creativelena on a world tour with her family: experiencing the Canadian Rocky Mountains up close with the right RV.
The travel blogger and mother Creativelena shares practical tips for an RV trip with children through Western Canada.

Travel blogger Elena Paschinger shows how to plan an RV trip through Western Canada, what to consider when choosing the right RV, and which stops are particularly attractive for families.

Western Canada, especially the many national parks in the Rocky Mountains, is extremely well equipped for RV travelers. With a motorhome, you and your family can truly enjoy Canada’s fascinating natural landscapes. Even in cities and towns, you’ll always find suitable (day) parking to explore the area or do some shopping.

Choosing the Right RV

Selecting an RV for your vacation generally depends on your available budget and individual space requirements. It’s worth taking advantage of a phone consultation, such as the one offered by our rental partner CanaDream.

In the model we booked, our children sleep above the driver’s cabin, and we parents sleep in a queen-size bed at the rear. Child seats, camping chairs, and a camping table can be added upon request.

My tip: If you book a mobile Wi-Fi router for the RV, you can stay connected on the road, book campsites spontaneously in advance, or use online map services on your phone.

Campgrounds in Western Canada

Most campgrounds are located along the popular tourist routes through the Canadian Rocky Mountains. During the high season, which begins as early as the end of May and lasts until October, it’s advisable to book all campsites online in advance.

Most campgrounds feature a playground or even a pool; some also offer communal areas, such as for movie nights.

Wild camping is generally allowed in Western Canada unless otherwise indicated. Some motels, especially those in remote areas, allow self-contained RVs to park on their lots.

Route Through the Canadian Rocky Mountains: Tips for Family-Friendly Destinations

From Vancouver, it’s best to follow the Trans Canada Highway heading east. This route passes through the two large provinces of British Columbia and Alberta in Western Canada.

Kelowna, in the Okanagan Valley, offers a surprising variety of agricultural products that thrive in the mild climate of the Rocky Mountains (including vineyards!).

Railway enthusiasts of all ages will love the Revelstoke Railway Museum. The history of the railway is engagingly presented, and there’s a lovingly designed play area for children.

Lake Louise and Banff are among the most visited regions in Banff National Park; be sure to reserve campsites, park tickets, and entrance passes in advance.

Heritage Park in Calgary attracts visitors of all ages, whether they’re interested in history or amusement parks.

Finally, a detour to the Canadian prairies is recommended, to Drumheller east of Calgary. There you’ll find a “dinosaur stronghold” with one of the best dinosaur museums in the world. This is due to the many significant dinosaur discoveries made in Western Canada.
